BREASTFEEDING: THE PHYSICIANS ROLE
A Resource Guide
by Alicia Dermer, MD, IBCLC, Clinical Associate Professor, Department
of Family Medicine, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey
- Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
Despite numerous well-documented benefits of breastfeeding to children's
and mother's health and to society, breastfeeding rates have stagnated.
In order to effectively protect, promote and support breastfeeding, physicians
must be knowledgeable about lactation, understand the many barriers that
mothers face, and provide accurate, non-commercial patient education materials
to the families in their care. This guide is intended to provide basic
lactation management knowledge and resources for optimal breastfeeding
assistance.
